I've recently completed a commisioned set of studio photos for a mate that dances to show clients. The criteria was to to shoot and present 10-14 photos as a portfolio showing different sides to the models personaliy and abilities.
I will be uploading some of the chosen prints over the next few weeks
Cool! Its nice having just him against an all white background (apart from the shadow of course), what kind of camera setting did u have for this shot?
A very promising effort. The technicalities involved in such shoots are infamously difficult to deal with, motion blur being one of the greatest. The pose is perfect, with his leg aitting out at a right angle, and the other calf parallel. Gives the photo a certain edge. My only nag here is the lighting. It's a little too harsh. I love the white high key photography style you've gone for, but it's resulted in him having a burnt out t-shirt, stomach and arm. The composition is excellent, and it's pretty sharp, so all credit for that.
the shadow was intentional, wanted a subtle shade below him to give some sort of conection to the ground, otherwize it would look like his just been cut out and put on a white background or just floating.
As for the set up, two backlights to burn the background out, and one main Bowens flash unit to the left for the subject. Camera settings were Manual mode <exif datas to the right of my description> using a Sekonic flashmeter
cheers BigDave. Im very very new to studio work and took on a very ambitious shoot for my level of experience. It was a friend I was shooting and he knew I was still learning so i could relax and try things out and experement, not always getting it spot on :S but every mistake i learn from and an hounest constructive comment like yours really help me improve
One of the tricky things was resetting the lighting every time he performed a different move as different parts of hit body were at different highs and differerent distances away from the camera. I had to lights set on the backing sheet to try and burn the background to a pure white but this meant when part of his body got too far back it burns out, I ended up partialy getting round this problem by attatching barn doors to the backlights and directing them more controled/specificaly backward. Also with him moving back and forward while dancing/performing different moves i was constantly having to re-meter :s
I realise the burning out is a flaw with this shot but he hit the move spot on in this shot and from a non photographer point of view I dont think it detracts from the shot.
Unfortunately not. I've never worked in a studio. It's something I might look into at some point, but I most create my own mini sutdios at home With colour cast correction (WB) it's not so necessary to have studio lighting... so for the sort of things I do, I can get simulate most of the factors that make up a studio
